Colonic Hydrotherapy, sometimes known as colon hydrotherapy or colonic irrigation, is a complementary therapy that supports digestive wellbeing and the natural evacuation of bowel contents from the large intestine.
Warm, filtered water is gently introduced into the colon through a specialised closed treatment system, helping to soften bowel contents and encourage the colon's natural muscular movement. Your therapist controls the treatment and monitors your comfort throughout.
At Health Pod Frodsham, Colonic Hydrotherapy is provided as a digestive wellbeing therapy. It is not used to diagnose, treat or cure medical conditions and should not replace appropriate medical advice, investigations or treatment.
What happens during a session
- You are given privacy to undress from the waist down and are appropriately covered throughout.
- A small sterile, single-use rectal tube or appropriate device is gently inserted, and warm filtered water is gradually introduced into the colon.
- You may feel fullness, mild pressure, an urge to open your bowels or mild cramping. Water and bowel contents leave the body through the closed system.
- Your therapist remains with you and monitors your comfort. Colonic Hydrotherapy should not be severely painful.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need to take laxatives or prepare beforehand?
You do not normally need to take laxatives or complete bowel preparation. Stay well hydrated, eat a light meal beforehand and avoid a very heavy meal or excessive alcohol before your appointment.
How long does a treatment take?
A Colonic Hydrotherapy treatment is approximately 45 minutes. Your first appointment may take slightly longer to allow for consultation, preparation and aftercare advice.
Is it painful?
Colonic Hydrotherapy should not be severely painful. You may feel fullness, pressure or mild cramping. Always tell your therapist if you experience significant pain, dizziness or feel unwell.
Are there any risks?
Colonic Hydrotherapy is not completely risk-free. Some clients experience temporary responses such as mild cramping or bloating, and rare but potentially serious complications are possible. This is why a detailed consultation and contraindication screening are essential.
